Brookville, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team got its 2014 season off on the right foot on a steamy, late summer Friday afternoon on Long Island, as the Purple Knights defeated the American International College Yellow Jackets, 2-1, in the season opener for both squads to kick off the 2014 LIU Post Women's Soccer Classic. UB came into the match ranked number 20 in the nation in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Women's Preseason Poll; while AIC is ranked number four in the country in that same poll. The win by the Purple Knights also avenges a 2-0 defeat in last season's NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament Second Round.
The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard quickly in Friday's season opener when Sonia Basma found the back of the net just 3:42 into the match.
The Purple Knights would tie things up at 1-1 just 1:36 before halftime when junior Gabby Reis (West Haven, Conn.) scored off a beautiful back-heel pass from freshman Ellen Karlsson (Orebro, Sweden).
Bridgeport would score the game-winning goal only 1:50 into the second half when sophomore Amanda Moura (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) netted an unassisted goal.
In the match, Bridgeport outshot AIC, 17-4.
Freshman Lina Domberg (Orebro, Sweden) picked up the win in the UB net in her Purple Knights' debut.
Bridgeport will wrap up play in the 2014 LIU Post Women's Soccer Classic on Sunday afternoon when they face the Southern Connecticut State University Owls at 4:30 p.m. to wrap up the tourney.
