Freshman Johanna Wilroth's First Half Goal Lifts Women's Soccer To 1-0 Win Over Southern Connecticut State
Purple Knights Head Into 2013 Home Opener On Wednesday Night Versus Southern New Hampshire At 1-1-0
Springfield, Mass.-Freshman Johanna Wilroth (Vasteras, Sweden) scored the only goal of the afternoon when she put home a rebound off a shot by classmate Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) just over 13 minutes into the match, as the University of Bridgeport women's soccer team (1-1-0) picked up its first win of the 2013 season with a 1-0 blanking of the Southern Connecticut State University Owls (0-2-0) on the final day of the AIC Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts.
The win by the Purple Knights over the Owls is the first one in the all-time series between the two schools by UB, as SCSU had won the previous seven encounters.
Senior goalkeeper Julia Hansson (Tocksfors, Sweden) made six saves to record her first clean sheet of 2013. Southern Connecticut's Rachael Hafer was outstanding in goal making 12 saves to keep her team close in the match. Bridgeport outshot SCSU, 18-15, on the day.
Up next for the Purple Knights is the team's 2013 home opener on Wednesday night (September 11) when UB hosts Southern New Hampshire University. Action gets underway at Knights Field at 6:00 p.m.
