UB Women's Soccer Raises Season Mark To 8-0-0 With Hard-Fought 1-0 Home Win Over Stonehill
Katie Stanley Nets Only Goal Of The Night For # 1 Purple Knights
Bridgeport, Conn.-Senior Katie Stanley (Oxon, England) scored off a free kick at the 23:13 mark of the first half for the only goal of the match, as the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights, the nation's number ranked team in NCAA Division II women's soccer by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), posted a hard-fought. 1-0, non-conference win over the Stonehill College Skyhawks on soggy Wednesday night in Bridgeport, Connecticut. With the win, the Purple Knights up their season record to an unblemished 8-0-0. Stonehill is now 7-2-1 on the season.
Stanley netted her third goal of the season when she floated a free kick into the top right corner of net from about 25 yards out.
Sophomore goalie Julia Hansson (Tockfors, Sweden) recorded her fourth consecutive shutout making four saves. Hansson now has a total of six clean sheets in eight matches so far in 2011, and she extends her scoreless streak to a total of 396:55 minutes.
The UB defense stifled Stonehill on the night allowing only five shots; four of which were on goal. UB had a total of 12 shots on the night. Stonehill keeper Amy Wheaton made five saves as he suffered her first loss of the season.
Bridgeport is back in action at home on Saturday afternoon, as the Purple Knights host NYIT in an East Coast Conference tilt that begins at 3:00 p.m.
