Women's Lacrosse Battles Wilmington (Del.) In Team's CACC Championship Tournament Debut
After A Strong Start, The # 6 Purple Knights Fall To # 3 Wildcats, 18-11
Newark, Del.-Making only the second postseason appearance in the program's 13-year history, the sixth-seeded University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team battled the host and third-seeded Wilmington (Del.) University Wildcats on Tuesday afternoon, and the hosts came away with a hard-fought 18-11 win over the Purple Knights in the First Round of the 2023 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship Tournament. UB completes its season with a 6-9 record. The Wildcats move on to the CACC Semifinals with a record of 13-5.
The Purple Knights got off to a strong start on Tuesday taking a 5-3 lead 2:56 to play in the first quarter, but the Wildcats would then score the next six goals to take a 9-5 lead which they never gave up.
Trailing 10-6 at the half, Bridgeport would chip away to cut the deficit to just three at 13-10 with 14:32 to play in the fourth quarter. Wilmington would then score the next five goals to take an 18-10 advantage and put the game away.
Danielle Kreitler (Grad., Shelton, Conn.) scored a team-high four goals at Wilmington, and freshman Tara Dimaio (Shirley, N.Y.) closed out her first college lacrosse season in fine style with five points on three goals and two assists.
Emily Stuart (Fr., Rising Sun, Md.) had a four-point afternoon in CACC Tournament play with two goals and a pair of assists.
Graduate student Andrea Basilicato (Guilford, Conn.), who finished as the teams leading scorer this season with 62 points on 34 goals and 28 assists, had three assists against the Wildcats and chipped in one goals.
Senior Tereza Kreuzova (Prague, Czech Republic) added her team's other goal on the day.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jacklyn Mellia (Nanuet, N.Y.) was busy in the Purple Knights' net making 15 saves.
