Women's Lacrosse Opens The 2022 Season With Big Win Over Nyack
Purple Knights Net A Single Game School Record 24 Goals In The Season-Opening Victory
Bridgeport, Conn.-Nine different players scored goals on Sunday afternoon, as the University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team opened its 2022 season with a 24-2 home, non-conference win over the visiting Nyack College Warriors. The 24 goals are a single-game school record for the Purple Knights surpassing 22 goals scored in a win at the University of the District of Columbia on March 9, 2020.
Graduate student Shyla Murray (Brentwood, N.Y.) led the UB goal parade with six on the day, and she added one assist to finish seven points on the day. Shyla also finished the day with a total of 11 draw controls and three ground balls and one caused turnover.
Senior Danielle Kreitler (Shelton, Conn.) finished with a team-high eight points in the victory netting five goals and dishing off three assists, and she added four draw controls two grounds balls and one caused turnover.
Graduate student Andrea Basilicato (Guilford, Conn.), who scored the first two goals of the game, finished with three goals for the winners, and four Purple Knights, Courtney Hylok (Grad., Muskegon, Mich.), Tereza Kreuzova (Jr., Prague, Czech Republic), Megan Kreitler (Sr., Shelton, Conn.) and Jessica Kinser (Sr., Voorhees, N.J.) had two goals apiece on the day.
Hylok also had three assists on the afternoon to finish five points on the day.
As a team, Bridgeport registered assists on half of their goals scored with 12 helpers on the day.
In net, Bridgeport freshman Jacklyn Mellia (Nanuet, N.Y.) made four saves over the 60 minutes to earn the win in her collegiate debut.
Madison Mattera put home both goals for the Warriors.
Up next, the UB women's lacrosse team will play its first road game of the season, as the Purple Knights travel to the Garden State of New Jersey to face Felician University on Wednesday afternoon, March 2nd. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
