Four Late Goals Lift UB Women's Lacrosse To A 15-13 Season-Opening Home Win Over Kutztown
Junior Julia Ruscio Leads Bridgeport With Five Goals On The Day
Bridgeport, Conn.-Trailing by one goal, 12-11, with 7:15 to play in the second half, the University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team exploded for four consecutive goals to give the host Purple Knights a 15-12 lead which they would not give up in a 15-13 victory over the Kutztown University Bears in the 2020 season opener for both teams. Bridgeport raced out to a 10-4 at the half, but the visiting Bears came back to score eight of the next nine markers to grab that 12-11 lead before the hosts would rally for the win.
Junior Julia Ruscio (St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada) led the Purple Knights with five goals and added one assist for a six-point day.
Sophomore Jessica Kisner (Voorhees, N.J.) also finished with six points in the season opener scoring three goals and dishing off three assists.
UB sophomore Hannah McDermott (Guilford, Conn.) also netted a hat trick with goals for the winners, and senior Barbara Orsini (N. Babylon, N.Y.) had a multi-goal game with two for the Purple Knights. Orsini also had two assists on the day.
Freshman Jessie Bennett (Monroe, Conn.) and senior Courtney Hylok (Muskegon, Mich.) rounded out the Bridgeport goal scorers with one apiece.
Senior goalkeeper Cheyanne Gangel (Oakridge, N.J.) made 11 stops on the day for the Purple Knights.
Kutztown held a slight edge in shots, 33-31, and Bridgeport finished with a 29-23 advantage in ground balls.
Up next, the UB women's lacrosse team will play its first road game of 2020 when the Purple Knights travel to Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday afternoon. Game time in New Haven is slated for 4:00 p.m.
