Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team opened its 2016 East Coast Conference schedule at home on Wednesday afternoon, and the Purple Knights gave highly-ranked LIU Post Pioneers, (number five in the nation in NCAA Division II) all they could handle, as LIUP nipped UB, 7-5. Bridgeport is now 6-2 overall and 0-1 in the ECC. LIU Post ups its season mark to 6-1, and the Pioneers are now 2-0 in conference play.
Junior Abigail Benesh (Horesheads, N.Y.) led UB with three points on the day, as she scored one goal and added two assists.
Courtney Forry (Soph., Reinholds, Pa.), freshmen Barbara Orsini (N. Babylon, N.Y.) and Joanna Muniz (Queens, N.Y.) and senior Kerry Mackinnon (Pt. Jefferson Station, N.Y.), each also had one goal for the Purple Knights on the afternoon.
Freshman goalie Cheyanne Gangel (Oakridge, N.J.) had a strong game for Bridgeport making a total of seven saves.
Up next, the UB women's lacrosse team will continue East Coast Conference play on the road on Saturday when the Purple Knights travel to NYIT. Game time is 11:00 a.m.
