12-Goal Second Half Lifts UB Women's Lacrosse To 15-7 Home Win Over Caldwell
Senior Day Victory Lifts Team's Overall Record To 6-1 Already Surpassing Last Season's Win Ttotal
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team exploded for 12 goals in the second half at home on Saturday afternoon, as the Purple Knights made it a happy Senior Day 2017 with a 15-7 win over the visiting Caldwell College Cougars. The victory, the Purple Knights fifth in a row, give UB a 6-1 overall record this season which already surpasses last win total of five. Caldwell is now 2-3 overall this season.
Junior Abigail Benesh (Horesheads, N.Y.), who will graduate in only three years from UB and celebrated Senior Day on Saturday, led the team with four goals and one assist and Saturday. Senior Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) had three goals for the winners, and classmate Rebecca Rieg (Long Valley, N.J.) chipped in two goals and one helper for the winners.
Six Purple Knights each had one goal on the day in freshman Barbara Orsini (N. Babylon, N.Y.), who also had two assist, Alexis Malvaso (So., Jordan, N.Y.), Joanna Muniz (Fr., Queens, N.Y.), Courtney Forry (Soph., Reinholds, Pa.), Shannon Colligan (Sr. Greenwich, Conn.) and junior Ava Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.).
Senior Kerry Mackinnon (Pt. Jefferson Station, N.Y.) also had an assist for UB on Saturday.
Freshman goalie Cheyanne Gangel (Oakridge, N.J.) made 10 saves in the game to earn win number six this season.
Up next, the UB women's lacrosse team will open up East Coast Conference play at home on Wednesday afternoon when the Purple Knights host LIU Post at 4:00 p.m.
