UB Women's Lacrosse Battles At Southern Connecticut But Falls 16-13 In First Road Game Of 2017
Team Returns To Knights Field To Face Georgian Court On Wednesday At 4:00 PM
New Haven, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team open its 2017 road schedule on Monday afternoon with a 16-13 loss at Southern Connecticut State University. The Purple Knights are now 1-1 on the young season; while the host Owls remain unbeaten at 2-0.
With game tied, 8-8, with 19:08 to play in the second half, SCSU would score the next four goals in a span of just under five minutes to take a 12-8 lead which they never relinquished.
Senior Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) led the visiting Purple Knights with four goals on the day.
Junior Abigail Benesh (Horesheads, N.Y.), sophomore Courtney Forry (Reinholds, Pa.) and freshmen Joanna Muniz (Queens, N.Y.) plus Barbara Orsini (N. Babylon, N.Y.), each had two goals for the Purple Knights, and Bridgeport received a single tally from senior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Conn.).
Colligan also chipped in three assists against the Owls.
Freshman goalkeeper Cheyanne Gangel (Oakridge, N.J.) made 10 saves for UB on Monday.
Nicole Healy led Southern Connecticut with five goals, and Owls' goalie Alexandra Takacs made eight saves for the winners.
The UB women's lacrosse team is back in action at home on Wednesday afternoon, when the Purple Knights host Georgian Court University at Knights Field. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
