Three Purple Knights Earn Spots On 2015 All-ECC Women's Lacrosse Teams
Gabrielle Valela Named First Team All-ECC And Lauren Mengel Garners Second Team All-ECC Accolades. Head Coach Kate Smullen Selected ECC Coach Of The Year
Central Islip, N.Y.-Three members of the University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team have been recognized by the East Coast Conference with sots on the 2015 All-ECC Teams. Senior Gabrielle Valela (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) earned First Team All-Conference honors, and sophomore Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) was selected Second Team All-Conference. Both Valela and Mengel were Second Team All-Conference picks in 2014. UB head coach Kate Smullen earned 2015 ECC Coach of the Year accolades, as selected by her peers.
Valela led Bridgeport in scoring this year netting 50 goals and dishing off 13 assists for a total of 63 points. In her four years in a Bridgeport uniform, Gabrielle scored 166 goals and had 27 assists for 193 total points.
Mengel starred on both offense and defense for UB amassing a team-high 40 grounds balls and slotting in third on the team's scoring list for 2015 with 25 goals and 14 assists for 39 points. Those 14 assists tied Lauren for the team-lead in that category.
Coming into the season, the Purple Knights had 12 wins over the first four seasons in program history. Under Smullen's guidance, Bridgeport doubled that total this season, finishing with an i impressive 12-4 record and narrowly missed out on an ECC Championship berth.
