HISTORY!!! UB Women's Lacrosse Takes First Win At The Varsity Level With 16-13 Triumph At Post University
Second-Year Program Opens 2012 Season With Road Win
Waterbury, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team made history on Friday afternoon in Waterbury, Connecticut, as the Purple Knights, opening their second season at the varsity level, posted the first win in the program's history defeating the host Post University Eagles (0-1), 16-13.
UB raced out to a 5-0 lead just 3:41 into the game and held a 10-7 lead at the half, but the Eagles battled back to tie the contest at 12-12 with 12:49 to play in the second half.
With the scored knotted at 12-12, Bridgeport would then score three consecutive goals, two by Lindsay Kehoe (Grad., West Haven, Conn.) at the 9:24 and 4:23 marks and what proved to be game-winning tally at the 6:04 mark by junior Jennavie Orrell (Gloucester, Mass.), to take an insurmountable 15-12 lead.
On the day, freshman Gabrielle Valela (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) led the Purple Knights in goal scoring with five. Kehoe had a fine afternoon tallying 10 points on four goals and six assists. Freshman Emily Catalano (N. Babylon, N.Y.) added two goals in her college debut.
Single goal scorers for the Purple Knights in their historic first victory were Orrell, Shealyn Scully (Fr., Huntington, N.Y.), Paige Adamsky (Fr., E. Williston, N.Y.), Alexia Costa (Fr., Providence, R.I.) and Katie King (Fr., Paxton, Mass.). Scully also had a pair of assists on the afternoon.
Sophomore goalkeeper Victoria Harrison (Massapequa, N.Y.) made six saves for the winners.
Freshman Miranda Polaski led the Post offense with four goals and one assist.
UB outshot the Eagles, 36-23, on the day.
The 16 goals scored on Friday are a UB single-game record for offense.
Next up for the Bridgeport women's lacrosse team is the Purple Knights' 2012 home opener versus Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday, March 10. Game time at Knights Field is set for 11:00 a.m.
