Purple Knights Win Ninth Straight ECAC Division II Women's Gymnastics Crown
2017 ECAC Title Is 20th In Program History
West Chester, Pa-The University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics team took home its ninth straight ECAC Division II title on Saturday afternoon in West Chester, Pennsylvania, as the Purple Knights posted a team score of 194.925 to top West Chester University and Southern Connecticut State University. Saturday's 2017 ECAC title is also number 20 in the program's storied history. West Chester took second place on Saturday with a team score of 192.875 and SCSU was third with a total of 190.050.
The Purple Knights won three of four events on Saturday scoring 48.725 on the vault, 48.650 on the bars and 49.000 in the floor exercise. UB was second on the beam with a team total of 48.650.
Bridgeport also had a gymnast finish in at least a tie for first place in each of the four events, and junior Kelsey Campbell (Las Vegas, Nev.) won Saturday's ECAC Division II all-around crown with a total of 39.125 in the four events, and freshman Maya Reimers (New York, N.Y.), who was named the ECAC Division II Rookie of the Year following the meet, took third in the all-around with a total of 38.825.
Senior Brianna Comport (Gilbertsvile, Pa.) finished in first place tie in the floor exercise with a score of 9.875, and she also won the balance beam with a score of 9.990.
In the floor exercise, Reimers took third place at 9.850, and senior Randi Cutolo (S. Jordan, Utah) tied fourth with a score of 9.825.
On the beam, Campbell tied for fourth with a score of 9.800.
Senior Christine Liautaud (Cary, Illinois) took first on the bars with a score of 9.825, and Kelsey Campbell tied for second at 9.775, and sophomore Thomara Powell-Brown (Rocky Hill, Conn.) tied for fourth on the bars at 9.700.
UB captured the four top spots on the vault, as senior Kimberly Stewart (Eastham, Mass.) took first place at 9.825, Campbell was second at 9.775, freshman Nina Whittaker (Salem, N.H.) finished third at 9.750, and Maya Reimers was fourth with a score of 9.700.
Along with Reimers being named ECAC Division II Rookie of the Year, Bridgeport took home two more major awards as Christine Liautaud earned Co-ECAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, and Brianna Comport was selected as the 2017 ECAC Specialist of the Year.
