Women's Gymnastics Tops Temple And Southern Connecticut State In 2014 Home Opener
Senior Melissa Doucette Wins Thursday's All-Around Title
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics team opened its 2014 home schedule on Thursday evening in the Wheeler Recreation Center by topping Temple University and Southern Connecticut State. UB won the tri-meet with a total score of 192.975 (a season best in three meets so far in 2014). Temple took second place with a score of 188.350, and SCSU was third with a total of 187.125. As a team, the Purple Knights won all four events taking the vault (48.375), the bars (48.150), the beam (47.925) and the floor exercise (48.525).
Bridgeport senior Melissa Doucette (Somersworth, N.H.) won Thursday's all-around title with a total of 38.650 for the four events. Doucette took first place on the vault (9.875). Classmate Lissette La Fex (Diamond Bar, Calif.) was second in the all-around with a total of 38.525. La Fex took first place on the bars with a score of 9.800, and she was fourth on the beam with a score of 9.575.
UB junior Sasha Tsikhanovich (Marysville, Ohio) took first place in the floor exercise with a score of 9.825, and she tied for second on the beam with teammate Lisa Oakes (Sr., Suffern, N.Y.) with a score of 9.650.
On the vault, senior Kamri Riles (Ellenwood, Georgia) and freshman Hope Tralli (Croton-On-Hudson, N.Y.) tied for second behind their teammate Melissa Doucette with score of 9.675. Riles also was second in the floor exercise with a score of 9.750.
Freshman Amber Hill (Windsor Locks, Conn.) had a strong performance for the Purple Knights on the bars taking third place with a score of 9.700.
The UB women's gymnastics team returns to action on Sunday, January 26 when they travel to Providence, R.I. to face host Brown University along with Brockport State and Rhode Island College. Action is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
