Gymnastics Continues Fine Start To 2013 Season By Winning Sunday's Brown Invitational
Purple Knights Take First Place With Team Total Of 194.600
Providence, R.I.-The University of Bridgeport gymnastics team wrapped up a busy weekend of action by winning their second meet in back-to-back days. After taking a quad meet hosted by Rutgers on Saturday, the Purple Knights traveled to Brown University on Sunday afternoon and took first place with a team score of 194.600. UB won all four events on Sunday winning the vault (48.900), the bars (48.400), the beam (48.475) and the floor (48.825). Bridgeport has improved its total team score in all three meets in which the Purple Knights have competed in so far this season.
The host Brown University Bears took second place as team on Sunday with a score of 192.225, the University of Rhode Island Club Team was third with 168.575 team points and Rhode Island College was fourth with a score of 166.550.
In Sunday's all-around, sophomore Sasha Tsikhanovich (Marysville, Ohio) took first place with an impressive total of 39.375. Tsikhanovich won the beam with a score of 9.900, and she was second in each of the other three events posting a 9.825 in the floor exercise, a 9.800 on the bars and a 9.850 in the vault.
Senior Monica Mesalles Sallares (Barcelona, Spain) won two events at Brown with identical scores of 9.900 taking the top spot in the vault and the floor exercise.
Junior Lissette La Fex (Diamond Bar, Calif.) completed the UB sweep of the individual event crowns on Sunday as she took first on the bars with a score of 9.825.
Graduate student Lorraine Galow (Suwanee, Georgia) had a strong performance on the beam at Brown finishing in a tie for third place with a score of 9.750.
The Bridgeport gymnastics team returns to action on Saturday, January 26 when the Purple Knights will travel to Towson University for a meet that will feature the host Tigers, Ursinus College and Lindewood University plus UB. Next Saturday's meet in Maryland is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
