Women's Basketball Wins at Wilmington, 51-38
Shakira Hester and Stephanie McBride combined for an incredible 30 rebounds, 26 points and five blocks.
WILMINGTON, Del. – Highlighted by a shutdown defensive performance, the University of Bridgeport's women's basketball team earned a 51-38 victory at Wilmington on Saturday. The win pushes the Purple Knights' CACC record to 5-5 this season.
Rebounding told a large part of the story for UB as they outrebounded the Wildcats by a 58-39 margin. In fact, Bridgeport grabbed a remarkable 25 offensive boards which yielded a total of 21 points.
The 38 points allowed by the Purple Knights, including no more than 10 in a single quarter, signifies their lowest total of the season. In fact, Bridgeport is now ranked 4th in the CACC this year in defensive scoring (allowing 61.0 points per game).
The Purple Knights did most of their damage in the third quarter. UB turned a one-point halftime deficit into an eight-point edge after 30 minutes. They then put together a 13-10 final quarter.
Individually, it was the Shakira Hester and Stephanie McBride Show. The Bridgeport duo combined for an incredible 30 rebounds with both players snagging 15 boards.
McBride, who finished with 14 points and two blocks as well, has now eclipsed 800 career rebounds in 95 career games. She is currently ranked fourth in the CACC in boards per contest (9.5) this season.
Hester also had a double-double with 12 points, in addition to a stat line of four steals, three blocks and two assists. Hester is currently ranked in the top 10 of the CACC in rebounds per game, total blocks, and total steals.
Freshman Harmony Earth-Wiley served as UB's third double-figure scorer with 11 points off the bench.
Defensively, the Purple Knights limited Wilmington to 13-of-51 shooting (25.5%) from the field. They also tallied 12 steals and forced a total of 19 Wildcats turnovers.
