Janiece Loney Tallies A UB Career-Best 25 Points But Women's Basketball Falls To Mercy, 67-62
UB Back In Action After The Holiday Break On December 30 When The Purple Knights Host New Haven
Bridgeport, Conn.-Janiece Loney (Grad., Herndon, Va.) scored a UB career-best 25 points on Sunday afternoon, but it was not enough, as the host University of Bridgeport Purple Knights dropped a 67-62 East Coast Conference women's basketball decision to the visiting Mercy College Mavericks in Hubbell Gym. Bridgeport is now 3-8 overall and 0-4 in conference play. Mercy moves to 5-6 overall and remains unbeaten in the ECC at 3-0.
Mercy went on a 7-2 run over the final 1:59 of play to secure the victory after Bridgeport's Jessica Nelson (So., Stamford, Conn.) had tied the game at 60-60 by splitting a pair of free throws.
Loney was joined in double-digit scoring by classmate Samirah Henderson (Rahway, N.J.), who scored 18 points, 13 of which came in the second half.
UB's Stephanie McBride (Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds on Sunday.
Asha Talib led three Mavericks in double figures netting 18 points, and she finished with a double-double picking up 11 boards on the day.
Following the Holiday Break, the UB women's basketball team will return to the court on Thursday, December 30, when they host a non-conference tilt with local rival the University of New Haven. Tip-time is set for 1:00 p.m.
