Women's Hoops Knocks Pace From The Ranks Of The Unbeaten With A 56-44 Home Victory
Purple Knights Now An Even 3-3 On The Season
Bridgeport, Conn.-It was a tough start, but a beautiful finish for the University of Bridgeport women's basketball team, as the host Purple Knights knocked the visiting Pace University Setters from the ranks of the unbeaten on Friday night, as UB picked up the non-conference win in Hubbell Gym, 56-44. The victory evens Bridgeport's overall record at 3-3 so far in the 2021-22 season, and the Setters are now 5-1.
Pace scored the first 14 points of the game, and the Purple Knights only mustered one point in the first quarter, as they trailed 14-1 after the opening frame, but it was all UB after that, as the hosts outscored the visitors, 55-30, over the final three periods of action.
Both teams struggled shooting the ball on Friday evening, as the Purple Knights hit 32.8 percent of their shots (20-of-61) in the game; while Pace shot 22.6 percent from the floor, going 14-of-62 in the loss.
The Setters committed 22 turnovers on the night which UB converted into 17 points, and the Purple Knights turned the ball over 16 times on their home floor.
Bridgeport's Samirah Henderson (Grad., Rahway, N.J.) had a solid all-around game for the winners leading the team with 18 points, plus she grabbed eight rebounds, dished off a game-high seven assists and also made five steals and blocked one shot.
Henderson was joined in double figures by sophomore Brianna Meekins (Bridgeport, Conn.) who scored 13 points.
Junior Stephanie McBride (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Purple Knights on the boards grabbing 15 rebounds.
Pace's Lauren Schetter led all scorers and rebounders on the night with a double-double of 21 points and 16 rebounds.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team will open a four-game, road trip with a non-conference contest on Tuesday night when they travel to the Garden State of New Jersey to take on Felician University. Tip-time in the shadow of Met Life Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
