Women's Basketball Rallies Past Mercy, 72-59, For Win Number 11 Of The Season
Purple Knights Now 11-8 Overall And 5-4 In The ECC
Valhalla, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team came back from a 34-29 halftime deficit to outscored the host Mercy College Mavericks, 43-25, in the second half to post a 72-59 East Coast Conference win on Saturday afternoon in a game played at Westchester Community College. With the win, the Purple Knights, who are now on a three-game winning streak, are 11-8 overall and 5-4 in the ECC. The 11 wins surpass last year's win total for the program of 10 with five weeks to play in the 2016-17 regular season. With the loss, Mercy slips to 3-15 overall and 1-9 in conference action.
UB sophomore Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.) recorded her second straight double-double for the winners, as she scored a team-leading 16 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Vonleh also erased three shots on the afternoon.
Samnell was joined in double figures by starters junior Aurelie Leblanc-Florent (Longueuil, Quebec, Canada) and sophomore Nicole Johnson (Newark, N.J.), who each netted 11 points, and senior Aaliyah Mercer (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 12 points and junior Morgen Caution (Baltimore, Md.) added 10 points off the Purple Knights' bench.
Mercy's Latisha Clark led all scorers in the game with 26 points.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team will look to continue its winning streak on Wednesday night at home when the Purple Knights host NYIT in Hubbell Gym. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
