UB Women Edge Dowling, 57-54, In ECC Action
Strong Final Minute Lifts Purple Knights To the Win
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team picked up a tight 57-54 East Coast Conference home win over the Dowling College Golden Lions on Tuesday night. With the win, the Purple Knights are now 5-8 overall and an even 3-3 in conference play. Dowling slips to 2-10 overall and 2-4 in the ECC.
UB led 32-31 at the half, and the Purple Knights seemed to take control of the contest in the third quarter opening the frame with a 9-0 run to grab a 41-31 lead. Bridgeport would remain on top the entire third quarter and stayed in the lead until Dowling's Kristina Surlan netted two free-throw with 1:15 to play to give her team a slim 52-51 edge.
It did not take long, however, for UB to regain the lead backs thanks to a field goal by junior Evelyn Ovner (Vallentuna, Sweden), pulling her team ahead, 53-52. That bucket also started a 5-0 run by the Purple Knights, to make the score 57-52, and put the game away.
Bridgeport did a good job of sharing the basketball in the win, as UB had 17 assists on 23 made baskets, and the winners dominated the glass outrebounding the visitors by a 46-28 margin.
Freshman Kadijah Dickson (Queens, N.Y.) finished as the leading scorer for UB with a game-high 19 points, and she was joined in double figures by Evelyn Ovner with 16 points and Louise Ovner (Vallentuna, Sweden) with 10 points.
Evelyn Ovner, Blevie Meyla Lucchesi (Jr., Avrille, France) and freshman Briana Stoddart (Brooklyn, NY) each finished with eight rebounds for the winners.
Kristina Surlan led Dowling with 18 points.
