Freshmen Briana Stoddart And Kadijah Dickson Help Propel Hosts To The Victory
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team picked up its first victory of the 2015-16 season at home on Thursday night with a 71-64 victory over the visiting Caldwell University Cougars. The Purple Knights are now 1-2 on the season, and Caldwell is now an even 2-2 to open the year,
UB overcame a slow start, as the hosts trailed 8-0 just 1:30 into play. Bridgeport led 14-9 at the end of the first quarter, and the Purple Knights never trailed after taking the lead in the opening stanza. The Cougars would cut the UB lead to one-point, 57-56, with 4:54 to play, but that is as close as the visitors would come to taking the lead in the contest.
A pair of freshmen led the UB attack on Thursday, as Briana Stoddart (Brooklyn, N.Y.) lead all scorers on the night with 20 points, and classmate Kadijah Dickson (Queens, N.Y.) added 19 points. Both players also contributed eight rebounds and three assists for the winners.
Junior Evelyn Ovner (Vallentuna, Sweden) also reached double-digit scoring with 10 points for Bridgeport.
UB sophomore Morgen Caution (Baltimore, Md.) had a strong game leading all players on the glass with 10 rebounds, and she also netted eight points.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team will play its first road contest of the season as the squad travels to Philadelphia University on Sunday afternoon. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
