Tiara Aziz Nets 29 Points But UB Women's Hoops Falls to Daemen, 68-61
Purple Knights Will Look To Get Back In Win Column At UDC Next Saturday
Bridgeport, Conn. – The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team fell to the visiting Wildcats of Daemen College on Saturday afternoon, 68-61, in an East Coast Conference tilt. The loss is Bridgeport's fourth in a row and drops their record to 4-20 overall and 2-14 in the ECC; while Daemen now sits at 10-11 overall and 7-8 in conference.
With the game tied at 20-20 with 8:19 on the clock in the first half, Daemen closed out the first half on a 20-9 run, including Jenna Hoffman's (Sr., Manchester Center, Vt.) three pointer as time expired, to go into the break with a lead of 40-29.
The Purple Knights clawed their way back into the game midway through the second half to bring the Daemen lead down to 46-43 with 11:41 to play. The Wildcats responded with an 8-0, over a span of 2:32 to bring their lead back up to double-digits at 54-43. Bridgeport would go on to outscore Daemen 20-7, to cut the lead to 63-61 with 1:17 to play. However, UB would fail to score again as the Wildcats hit five-of-six free throws down the stretch to seal the victory, 68-61.
Despite the loss, Bridgeport senior Tiara Aziz (Easton, Pa.) was a bright spot as she led all scorers on the afternoon with 29 points on 11-of-21 shooting from the floor and hitting six of her seven free throw attempts.
Joining Aziz in double-figures was classmate Jenna Hoffman with 13 points and sophomore forward Evelyn Ovner (Vallentuna, Sweden) who chipped in 11 points and pulled in a team high eight rebounds.
For Daemen, Sarah Saba finished with a double-double, scoring 25 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Up next for UB, the Purple Knights will travel to our Nation's Capital for an ECC matchup on Saturday, February 21 to take on the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia. Game time scheduled for 1:00 pm.
