Tiara Aziz Helps Women's Hoops Get Back In Win Column Netting A Career-Best 36 Points In 85-65 Wn Over Chestnut Hill
Purple Knights Outscore Griffins, 47-28, In Second Half To Snap Eight-Game Losing Skid
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team got back in the win column on Tuesday afternoon, as the Purple Knights closed out 2014 with an 85-65 home, non-conference victory over the visiting Griffins of Chestnut Hill College. Tuesday's win snapped an eight-game losing skid for UB, as the team is now 2-9 overall. Chestnut Hill slips to 3-8 overall.
Leading 38-37 at the half, the Purple Knights outscored the Griffins, 47-28, during the final 20 minutes of action, as Bridgeport did most of its damage from the foul line connecting on 28 of 24 free throws in the second half. As a team, UB went 40 of 48 from the line for the game. Chestnut Hill committed a total of 33 fouls on the day, and four Griffins' fouled out.
Bridgeport senior Tiara Aziz (Easton, Pa.) led all scorers on the day netting a career-high 36 points off the UB bench surpassing her previous single-game high of 33 scored last year versus Mercy College. Aziz hit 9 of 12 field goals, including one three-pointer, and she went 17 of 22 from the foul line. Aziz also grabbed nine rebounds on the day which tied her with sophomore Louise Ovner (Vallentuna, Sweden) for game-high honors on the glass.
Joining Aziz in double-digit scoring for Bridgeport were classmates Jenna Hoffman (Manchester Center, Vt.) with 13 points and Jennifer Kucukkaya (Sodertalje, Sweden) with 12 points. Kucukkaya also dished a game-high eight assists.
Shayla Felder led Chestnut Hill in scoring with 20 points.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team opens a three-game road trip at Southern New Hampshire University on Monday, January 5, 2015. Game time for the non-conference tilt is set for 5:30 p.m.
