PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Playing a third straight conference doubleheader, the University of Bridgeport's softball team earned a pair of wins at Holy Family on Friday. The Purple Knights rattled off victories of 7-5 and 5-3 to move their CACC record to 4-2 this season.
Game One – Bridgeport 7, Holy Family 5
It was the top of the order that piloted UB in the opener. Bridgeport's first five batters went a combined 10-for-19 with five runs scored and five RBIs.
The Purple Knights were on the offensive from the start. Angela Oros hammered an RBI triple in the top of the first inning to give UB the early edge.
The Purple Knights would go on to earn separate leads of 4-1 and 5-2 before tacking on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.
Sophomore Mya Jones and senior Meg McFarland each finished with three hits in the game while Oros, Madison D'Amato and Samantha Schiebe all had two hits apiece.
McFarland registered a pair of doubles while Schiebe and Jones also hit two-baggers.
Collectively speaking, the Purple Knights totaled a season-high 15 hits.
Senior Kaite Burawski picked up the win in the circle. The left-hander struck out 10 en route to her eighth complete game of the season. Burawski has now recorded 73 punch outs in 60.1 innings pitched.
Game Two – Bridgeport 5, Holy Family 3
It was once again the top of the order propelling UB's attack. Bridgeport's top six batters all had at least one hit while Jones added three more knocks. Jones finished the afternoon 6-for-9 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
The Purple Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth with Schiebe and McFarland each driving in a pair of runners. McFarland also knocked in UB's final tally in the sixth with an RBI single.
Isabelle Benjamin joined both Jones and McFarland with multiple hits in the second game. She finished 2-for-3 in the six-hole.
On the other side of the ball, Vise Zarate was once again stellar. The right-hander allowed just three earned runs in a complete-game performance. She didn't walk a single batter.
