Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team came back to pick up an impressive Senior Day doubleheader split against the number 25 ranked team in the nation, the Wilmington (Del.) University Wildcats, as in game two, UB tied the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh and then walked off with a run in the bottom of the eighth to earn a 6-5 win after falling in the opener, 9-0 in five innings. With the split, Bridgeport is now 26-21 overall and 14-8 in the CACC. Wilmington is now 31-11 overall and 21-3 in conference play.
In the nightcap, after tying the game on a Wildcats' error in the seventh, Bridgeport scored the game-winning run in the eighth after Hailey Kim (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) led off the inning with a single. She was then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Madison D'Amato (Warwick, R.I.) and then to third on a single by Gabby Simms (Grad., Phoenixville, Pa.), and Kim scored on freshman Mya Jones' (Milford, Del.) third hit of game two.
Senior Samantha Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.), the third Bridgeport pitcher in game two, picked up the win in the pitching circle for victory number eight of the season.
Classmate Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.) went a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish in the nightcap with an RBI.
In game one, the Purple Knights were limited to only four hits; two of which came off the bat of Hailey Kim.
Up next, the UB softball team will close out its 2023 regular season schedule with an important CACC road doubleheader against Alliance University on Wednesday afternoon on Staten Island. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
