Bridgeport, Conn.-For the second straight day, the University of Bridgeport softball team split a non-conference home doubleheader as the Purple Knights split with local rival the University of New Haven on Friday afternoon in Seaside Park by identical scores of 9-1. UB took the opener in six innings, and the Chargers won game two in five innings. With the split, Bridgeport is now 25-20 on the season. UNH is now 15-26.
In the opener, Alex Hughes (So., Joliet, Ill.) had three hits and one RBI, and Hailey Kim (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) also had three base knocks for the winners.
Samantha Schiebe (Sr., Monroe, Conn.) had two runs batted and classmate Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.) had two hits and an RBI, as did Gabby Simms (Grad., Phoenixville, Pa.).
Freshman Mya Jones (Milford, Del.) had two hits in game one, and sophomore Madison D'Amato (Warwick, R.I.) had an RBI.
In the pitching circle, Vise Zarate (Fr. Cypress, Calif.) raised her season mark to 17-7, as she fired a five-hit complete game victory in which she fanned two without issuing a walk.
In the nightcap, Mya Jones went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with the team's lone run batted in, and Taylor Yates also contributed two hits.
Up next, the UB softball team closes out its 2023 regular season home schedule on Saturday with a Senior Day conference doubleheader against the CACC-leading Wilmington (Del.) University Wildcats. Game time is set for 12:30 p.m.
