Bridgeport, Conn.-It was a busy day on offense for both teams, as the host University of Bridgeport Purple Knights and the visiting Felician University Golden Falcons split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader in Seaside Park on Thursday afternoon with UB winning game one, 12-6, and Felician taking game two, 6-5. With the split, Bridgeport is now 17-16 overall and 7-5 in conference play. Felician is now 21-12 overall and 9-3 in the CACC.
In game one, the two teams combined for a total of 25 hits, and they banged out 22 more hits combined in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Purple Knights scored their 12 runs on 14 hits led by senior Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calf.) who went 3-for4 with three runs scored and one RBI.
Freshman Mya Jones (Milford, Del.) had two hits and two runs batted, and Meg McFarland (Sr., Monroe, Conn.) plus juniors Grace Derita (Middletown, Conn.) and Hailey Kim (Virginia Beach, Va.) each had a pair for base hits and one RBI.
Gabby Simms (Grad, Phoenixville, Pa.), who collected her 200 career base hit in game two, had one hit and drove in four for the winners in the opener.
Freshman Vise Zarate (Cypress, Calif.) pitched a complete game in game one to earn win number 10 so far in 2023.
Taylor Yates and Mya Jones again starred at the plate for UB in game two, as Yates went 2-for-4 with three runs batted, and she smashed her first home run of the year, and Jones went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.
Senior Samantha Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.) who started in the pitching circle and took the loss in the nightcap, collected her 100 career base hit during the game.
Sophomore Erin Lifrieri (Seymour, Conn.) did an excellent job out of the Bridgeport bullpen keeping her team in the game with 3.1 innings of shutout ball.
Up next, the UB softball team will host the Rams of Thomas Jefferson University on Saturday afternoon at 12 noon in a CACC doubleheader that will begin at 12 noon. Saturday will also be Strike Out Cancer Day.
