Clermont, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport softball team played two complete different types of games on Friday as the Purple Knights (3-10) continued their season-opening Spring Trip in Florida, as UB opened the day falling in a pitchers' duel against St. Anselm (6-1, 3-1, and then closing the day with a 13-12 loss in a slugfest versus Concordia-St. Paul (5-7).
Against St. Anselm, senior Meg McFarland (Monroe, Conn.) had two hits, and sophomore Alex Hughes (Joliet, Ill.) drove in the Purple Knights' lone run.
Sophomore Madison D'Amato (Warwick, R.I.) and senior Samantha Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.), each had a double against the Hawks.
Freshman Vise Zarate (Cypress, Calif.) took the loss, but pitched well in the St. Anselm game working a complete game, in which she allowed only one earned run, as she fanned six and did not issue a base on balls.
To close out the day, Concordia-St. Paul scored five runs in the top of the first and held on for the win, as the Purple Knights tried to comeback all through the game but could never get the lead.
Madison D'Amato and senior Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.) each had two hits for Bridgeport in game two on Friday, and Yates plus Samantha Schiebe and freshman Mya Jones (Milford, Del.) had two RBI apiece to close out the day.
Up next, the UB softball trip wraps up its Spring Trip on Saturday with a pair of games facing West Virginia Wesleyan at 9:00 a.m. followed by Glenville State at 11:30 a.m. in Clermont, Florida.
