Clermont, Fla.-It was a tough Thursday in the Sunshine for the University of Bridgeport softball team, as the Purple Knights took on perhaps their toughest competition this season in number 18 Washburn University Ichabods and the defending NCAA Division II National Champions and current top-ranked team in the nation, the Hillcats of Rogers State University, and UB suffered a pair of losses falling to Washburn, 9-2, and losing to Rogers State, 9-2, in five innings. Bridgeport is now 3-8 on the season; while the Ichabods are 17-2 and the Hillcats move to 14-1.
Against Washburn, senior Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.) had two hits including a double, and classmate Samantha Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.) blasted a two-run home run.
Versus Rogers State, the Purple Knights drew a pair of walks but could only muster one hit, a fourth inning single by graduate student Gabby Simms (Phoenixville. Pa.).
Up next, the UB softball team will look to get back in the win column in Florida on Friday with two games, as the Purple Knights take on East Coast rival St. Anselm at 9:00 a.m. followed by a tilt with Concordia-St. Paul.
