Clermont, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport softball team opened the Florida portion of its Spring Break trip on a breezy Monday in the Sunshine State by splitting a doubleheader with the Assumption University Greyhounds. Assumption (3-3) took game one, 7-3, and UB earned the split with a 3-1 victory in the nightcap to give the Purple Knights a 2-5 overall record so far in 2023.
In the opener, senior Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.) drove in two runs with a double, and newcomer Gabby Simms (Grad., Phoenixville, Pa.) and junior Grace Derita (Middletown, Conn.), each had two hits, and Derita also had an RBI.
In game two, the Purple Knights scored a run in the first inning and two more in the third on their way to the 3-1 triumph over the Greyhounds.
Gabby Simms stayed hot at the plate in the nightcap reaching base all three times in the contest with two hits, giving her five for the day, and a walk. She also stole a base and drove in a run.
Taylor Yates and Grace Derita also had runs batted in the winners in game two.
In the pitching circle, freshman Vise Zarate (Cypress, Calif.) had the best outing of her young Bridgeport career earing her second win of the season working a complete game in which she allowed only one unearned run on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Up next, the Purple Knights continue play at the Spring Games in Clermont, Florida with an early wake up call on Tuesday taking on Gannon University at 9:00 a.m. followed by a game against the University of Findlay at 11:30 a.m.
