Mercy
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team clinched at least the number two seed in next week's East Coast Conference Championship Tournament and ran its winning streak to six games on Friday afternoon with a conference sweep over the visiting Mercy College Mavericks, as UB took game one, 2-0, and won game two, 9-1, in five innings. With the two victories, the Purple Knights are now 32-13 overall and 16-6 in the ECC. Mercy is now 10-35 overall and 8-14 in conference play.
In game one, Bridgeport gave junior Kaite Burawski (Hartley, Del.) all the offense she would need when they scored two runs in the top the first inning on an RBI-sing by junior Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.) and a run-scoring fielder's choice from sophomore Kiana Robinson (Hamden, Conn.).
Burawski fired her ninth shutout of 2022, as she blanked the Mavericks on only three hits over her seven innings of work, in which she struck out 11 and walked just two. Kaite is now 21-5 on the season.
In the nightcap, the Purple Knights scored runs in every inning to pick up the 9-1 triumph in five innings.
Senior Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.) had two hits and drove in four runs in game two, and junior Meg McFarland (Monroe, Conn.) knocked in three runs, and classmate Missy Daigneault (Rensselear, N.Y.) had two RBI for the winners.
In the pitching circle, Samantha Schiebe (Jr., Monroe, Conn.) raised her season record to 7-6, as she earned the win hurling five innings in which she gave up only one run on five hits with one strikeout and two walks.
Up next, the UB softball team closes out its 2022 regular season schedule with a key ECC home doubleheader against St. Thomas Aquinas College. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
