Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport softball team slugged its way to an East Coast Conference doubleheader sweep of the host Mercy College Mavericks on Friday afternoon, as the Purple Knights had a total of 30 hits and scored 21 runs on the day, taking game one, 5-4, and mashing their way to a 16-13 victory in game two; a contest that was called after six innings due to darkness. With the sweep, UB is now 16-11 overall and even 4-4 in the ECC. Mercy, losers of 16 games in a row, are now 2-23 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
In game one, the Purple Knights came back from a 3-1 deficit after three innings, as they tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth on a two-RBI double by freshman Kalea Faulk (Corning, N.Y.), and then grabbed a 5-3 lead which they never relinquished in the top of the sixth on a single by freshman Madison D'Amato (Warwick, R.I.) and a Mavericks' error.
As a team, Bridgeport banged out 12 hits in the opener led by sophomore Kiana Robinson (Hamden, Conn.), who had three hits.
Junior Kaite Burawski (Hartley, Del.) earned her tenth win of 2022 in game one upping her season record to 10-5, as she pitched complete game number 13 of the year. Over her seven innings of work, Burawski allowed eight hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts and four walks.
In game two, the Purple Knights' bats were booming, as UB scored a season-high 16 runs, touching the plate in all but one inning, with a season-best 18 hits.
Bridgeport blasted three home runs in the first inning, as Taylor Yates (Jr., Elk Grove, Calif.), Kiana Robinson and Kalea Faulk all went deep.
In the nightcap, Yates went 4-for-4 with four runs batted in, and Robinson went 4-for-5 with 3 RBI for the winners.
Junior Samantha Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.) knocked in three runs for the Purple Knights in game two, and she also earned the win in the pitching circle working 5.2 innings of relief to up her season record to 4-5 so far in 2022.
Up next, the UB softball team is scheduled to head to New York City for a Sunday East Coast Conference doubleheader at Queens (N.Y.) College. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
