Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team kicked off its 2022 home schedule in fine style on a chilly Wednesday afternoon in Seaside Park with a non-conference doubleheader sweep over the Assumption University Greyhounds, as the Purple Knights took game one, 11-0 in five innings, and completed the sweep with a 5-4 victory in the nightcap. With the two wins, Bridgeport is now 12-7 overall this season. Assumption slips to 3-14 so far in 2022.
In the opener, UB scored in every inning, and junior Kaite Burawski (Hartley, Del.) dominated in the pitching circle to raise her season record to 7-4, as she allowed only one hit with 12 strikeouts and no walks over the five innings.
Senior Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.) and freshman Kalea Faulk (Corning, N.Y.) led the Purple Knights offense, as they each had a pair of hits and drove in two runs.
Junior Meg McFarland (Monroe, Conn.) had had two runs batted in the opener, and junior Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.) and sophomore Hailey Kim (Virginia Beach, Va., each had one RBI for the winners in game one.
In game two, Bridgeport trialed 3-0 after the top of the second inning, but the host stormed back with four runs in the bottom of the second on two-RBI hits by freshman Madison D'Amato (Warwick, R.I.) and Taylor Yates.
D'Amato finished the nightcap with two hits, as did junior Samantha Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.)
Freshman Erin Lifrieri (Seymour, Conn.) earned her second win of the second in game two, as she worked 2.1 scoreless innings of relief in which she gave up only one base hit.
Game one winner Kaite Burawski worked the final three innings of game two to pick up her second save of 2022.
Up next, the UB softball team will return to East Coast Conference play, as they travel to St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday for a doubleheader slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
