Buffalo, N.Y-The University of Bridgeport softball team opened its 2022 East Coast Conference schedule with the long trip to Buffalo, New York on Sunday, as Purple Knights earned a doubleheader split with the host D'Youville College Saints. The Saints edged the Purple Knights, 3-2, in the opener, and UB rebounded to earn the split with a 7-3 victory in game two. With the split, Bridgeport is now 10-7 overall and 1-1 in the ECC. D'Youville is now 9-3 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
In the opener, senior Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.) and junior Samantha Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.) each had two hits, and Schiebe and junior Missy Daigneault (Rensselear, N.Y.), each had one RBI.
Junior Kaite Burawski (Harley, Del.) was the hard-luck loser in game one, as she worked a complete game in which she allowed seven hits, three runs (two earned) with twelve strikeouts and two walks.
In game two, Kaira Ramon continued her outstanding start to the season at the plate going 2-for-3 with three runs batted to lead the Bridgeport offense.
The Purple Knights also got runs batted in from junior Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, California) and freshman Madison D'Amato (Warwick, R.I.) in the nightcap.
In the pitching circle, Samantha Schiebe fired her first complete game of 2022 to earn the win, as she worked seven innings in which she allowed seven hits and three runs with three strikeouts and two walks.
Up next, the UB softball is slated to open its 2022 home schedule on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., when Assumption College come to Seaside Park for a non-conference doubleheader.
