Softball's Kaira Ramon Earns Spot On CoSIDA National Academic All-America Team
2021 ECC Player of the Year Earns Third Team National Recognition
Bridgeport, Conn.-University of Bridgeport softball standout Kaira Ramon (Sr., Stamford, Conn.) has been honored for her outstanding play on the field and her top-notch work in the classroom with her selection as a national CoSIDA Academic All-America, earning a spot on the 2021 National NCAA Division II Softball Academic All-America Third Team selected by CoSIDA (The College Sports Information Directors Association of America).
A computer engineering major and Honorable Mention All-America selection in the outfield, Ramon, the 2021 East Coast Conference Player of the Year, helped UB to both the ECC regular season and conference tournament titles this season and a berth in the NCAA Regional where the Purple Knights posted the program's first win on the national stage since 1989. Kaira batted an impressive .424 in 2021 with two home runs and 20 RBI.
To be nominated as a CoSIDA Academic All-America, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution.
Ramon's selection marks the 14th all-time national Academic All-America team member selected from the University of Bridgeport joining softball's Cathleen Meade (Second Team in 1993), women's soccer's Julia Hansson (Second Team in 2012 and First Team in 2013), women's soccer's Tabea Rauschenberg (Second Team in 2014), men's swimming Ruben Jimenez (First Team and National Division II Men's At-Large Academic All-America of the Year in 2014 and 2015), men's swimming Oscar Pereira (Second Team in 2014), women's volleyball Ying Shen (Third Team in 2014), women's soccer Nicola Worthington (Second Team in 2016). women's gymnastics Christine Liautaud (Third Team in 2016), women's swimming Annagrazia Bonsanti (Second Team Women's At-Large in 2018), Maegan Doyle and teammate Jennifer Wendelius, who earned First and Second Team honors for women's soccer in 2018, plus Doyle earned Second Team honors in 2019.
