Softball Nipped By Adelphi, 3-2, In Opening Round Of 2021 NCAA East Regional
Purple Knights Will Now Face Molloy In An Elimination Game This Afternoon
Manchester, N.H.-The number-six seeded University of Bridgeport (22-8) softball team fell 3-2 to the third-seeded Adelphi University Panthers (28-8) in an opening round contest of the 2021 NCAA Division II East Regional hosted by St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. on Wednesday afternoon. UB will face Molloy in an elimination game this afternoon.
The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a solo homer run by Hannah Pineda, but the Purple Knights responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third on a bases-loaded double to center by senior Samantha Ferreri (Hauppauge, N.Y.).
Adelphi would push across what proved to be the game-winning runs in the bottom of the fifth on a double that was lost in the sun and a bases-loaded walk with one out in the frame.
Sophomore Kaire Burawski (Hartley, Del.) was the hard-luck loser for the Purple Knights firing a complete game, allowing six hits with seven strikeouts and six walks. Burawski is now 15-4 on the year.
Claire Fon worked three hitless innless of relief to earn the win for Adelphi.
