Sparkill, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport softball team continued its winning ways and moved closer kept a grip on the final spot in this year's East Coast Conference Championship Tournament by sweeping a conference doubleheader at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Tuesday to give the team five straight victories. The Purple Knights won game one, 9-3, and took the nightcap in shutout fashion, 5-0. UB is now 18-24 overall and 11-13 in the ECC. STAC slips to 14-27 overall, and the Lady Spartans are now 7-17 in conference action.
In the opener, the Purple Knights blew the game open with seven runs in the top of the third inning.
Junior Kerri Agrela (Smithfield, R.I.) went 3-for-4 at the plate in game one and also drove in two runs.
UB freshman Janaya Young (Orange, Conn.) drove in three runs in the opener and had a double and a triple.
Seniors Kaila Crandall (Little Rock, Calif.) and Paige Owens (Berlin, Conn.) also had two hits apiece for the winners in game one.
Junior pitcher Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) picked win number seven of the season for UB in the opener working all seven inning in which she gave up six hits with only one earned run, as she fanned four and issued three walks.
In game two, junior hurler Kaitlyn Lajoie (Vernon, Conn.) fired a four-hit, complete game shutout in which struck out nine and did not walk a batter.
Crandall chipped in three more hits in the nightcap to give her five on the day. Junior Meghan O'Leary (Lafayette, N.J.) had two hits and two runs batted in game two, and freshman Kamryn Beach (Tampa, Fla.) helped the winners with two hits and an RBI.
The UB softball team will now close out the 2016 regular season with a pair of home doubleheaders hosting LIU Post at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday in Seaside Park; followed by NYIT on Saturday at 12 noon.
