Sparkill, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport softball team put its offense in full display on Wednesday afternoon as the Purple Knights banged out a total of 22 hits sweeping a road East Coast Conference doubleheader from the host St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans, winning game one, 13-4 in six innings and completing the sweep with a 6-2 victory in game two. Bridgeport is now 7-17 overall and 3-7 in the ECC. STAC falls t 8-17 overall and 2-10 in conference play.
In the opener, the Purple Knights scored five runs in the top of first, keyed by a two-run home run by junior Kaila Crandall (Little Rock, Calif.). and never trailed in the game.
Crandall went 3-for-4 at the plate in the opener driving in four runs to help lead a 12-hit UB attack. Senior Sydney Phillips (Sebastopol, Calif.) also homered in game one, blasting a three-run shot.
Sophomore Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) notched the win in the opener firing a complete game in which she only allowed four hits.
In game two, the Purple Knights had 10 hits as a team led by sophomore Tara Faford (Grafton, Mass.), who went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and a triple and drove in three runs.
Kaila Crandall went from hitting star to pitching star in the nightcap picking up a complete game win.
The UB softball team is right back in action on Thursday afternoon, as the Purple Knights continue East Coast Conference play with a doubleheader at NYIT.
