Softball Closes Out 2014 Home Schedule With Split Versus Dowling
Purple Knights Right Back In Action At Molloy On Tuesday Afternoon
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team wrapped its 2014 home schedule on Monday afternoon with a split of an East Coast Conference doubleheader with the visiting Dowling College Golden Lions. UB took game one, 8-5, and DC captured game two, 15-6, in five innings. With the split, Bridgeport is now 18-24 overall and 11-13 in the ECC. Dowling is now 21-20 overall and 14-10 in conference action.
In game one, the Purple Knights scored three runs that became the margin of victory in the bottom of the fifth inning to snap a 5-5 on a two-RBI single by junior Sydney Phillips (Sebastopol, Calif.) and a base hit by freshman Ashley Hessler (Pawtucket, R.I.) that plated one run.
Earlier in the game, senior Mallory Streat (Guilford, Conn.) blasted a grand slam home run in the third inning; her third homer of the season.
Freshman Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) earned the victory in the pitching circle in the opener to raise her season record to 9-3, as she worked 2.1 of scoreless relief.
In the nightcap, Dowling scored in every inning and raced out to a 13-0 lead before the Purple Knights scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore Imane Alou Issa (Berchem, Belgium) led the UB offense in game two with three hits in four trips to the plate with one RBI.
The UB softball team is back in action tomorrow, Tuesday afternoon at Molloy College. Action is set to begin on Long Island at 3:00 p.m.
