Softball Wraps Up 2011 Season With Sweep Of NYIT
UB Wins 7-2 And 11-6
West Haven, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team closed out its 2011 season in fine style on Sunday afternoon with a sweep of an East Coast Conference doubleheader over the visiting NYIT Lady Bears which was played at West Haven High School. UB took game one, 7-2, and completed the sweep with an 11- win in game two. With the two wins, Bridgeport closes out the 2011 season with a 9-31-1 overall record and a 4-23-1 ECC mark. This season's nine overall wins are a five win improvement of last season's win total.
In game one, junior Emma Wojcik (Warsaw, Poland) and freshman Noelle Cahill (San Jose, Calif.) and Chloe Shill (Miami, Fla.), each had two hit hits and drove in a pair of runs. Shill also was the winning pitcher in game one firing a complete game to raise her season mark to 3-14. Senior Nicole Steiner (Edison, N.J.) and freshman Kelly Olencki (Milford, Conn.) also had two hits in the opener.
In game two, the Purple Knights used 12 total hits to score a season-high 11 runs. Sophomore Taylor McBeth (Langley B.C., Canada), who finished as the team's leading hitter this season with a .341 batting average, led the UB hit parade with three base knocks in the nightcap. Nicole Steiner had two more hits and adder two RBIS in game two, as did freshman Maria Pellino (Yonkers, N.Y.). Senior Tori Tenzyk (Hawthorne, N.Y.) also had two runs batted in for Bridgeport in game two. Freshman Tiffany Irrera (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the winning pitcher in game two to finish the season with a 5-10 record in the circle.
