Softball Splits With Post To Open Northern Portion Of 2011 Schedule
UB Rallies To Win Game One, 7-6, And Falls In Game Two, 12-1
Waterbury, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the Post University Eagles on Sunday afternoon, as the UB rallied to notch a 7-6 win in game one, and Post captured game two, 12-1. With the split, the Purple Knights are now 5-7 on the 2011 season, and those five wins have already surpassed last season's total for victories. Post is now 5-10 on the year.
With Bridgeport playing as the home team in both games on Sunday, the Purple Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to come away with the 7-6 victory. Trailing 6-5 entering the bottom of the seventh, junior Emma Wojcik (Warsaw, Poland) led off the inning with a double. Freshman Kelly Olencki (Milford, Conn.) drew a walk, and after a fly out, freshman Noelle Cahill (San Jose, Calif.) tied the game at 6-6 with and RBI single, and senior Tori Tenzyk (Hawthorne, N.Y.), who went 2-for-4 in game one, ended things in the opener with a hard single to center.
Freshman Chloe Shill (Miami, Fla.) had three hits for the Purple Knights in game one, and senior Nicole Steiner (Edison, N.J.) had two double for the winners.
Freshman Tiffany Irrera (Brooklyn, N.Y.) pitched a complete game in the opener to record her third win of the season.
In game two, Tori Tenzyk homered for UB's only run. Chloe Shill took the loss in the pitching circle in the nightcap.
The Bridgeport softball team is next schedule to be in action on Tuesday afternoon when thy host American International College. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
