New Era Of UB Cross Country Set To Begin Friday Afternoon September 2nd
New Head Coach Gregg Schmidt Set To Lead The Purple Knights' XC And New Track & Field Programs
Bridgeport, Conn.-A new era in University of Bridgeport cross country and track and field begins on Friday afternoon, September 2 when the Purple Knights' men's and women's XC squads open the 2022 season at Adelphi University Panther Invitational taking place at the Bethpage Polo Grounds which will be the site of this year's NCAA Regional meet on November 19. This year's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship Meet will be hosted by Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pa. on October 30.
The UB cross teams and the new indoor and outdoor track & field teams are under the direction of veteran head coach Gregg Schmidt, who joined the UB staff in December of 2021.
In talking about the prospects for this year's cross country squads, Schmidt stated. "While only a couple of the student-athletes on the rosters are 'true' long distance runners, we have a number of talented folks from the multi-events, mid-distance and long sprint events competing in cross country this year, so our goal is still to compete well at the regional level, and I think we are certainly capable of that. I am extremely excited to get the program rolling, this meet and this season are the first steps to establishing the cross country/track & field programs here at UB"
