Swim Teams Complete Excellent Weekend At 2015 Metropolitan Collegiate Conference Championship Meet
Women Take Second Place And Men Finish In Third
Piscataway, N.J.-The University of Bridgeport women's and men's swimming teams capped off a superb weekend at the 2015 Metropolitan Collegiate Conference Championship Meet which took place in the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center on the campus of Rutgers University. The UB women finished in second place in the eight-team event with a total of 1,002.5 points finishing behind first place LIU Post (1,235 points), and the Bridgeport men took third place in their eight-team competition with a total of 1,124.5 points. The College of New Jersey won the men's event with 1,404 points, and Rowan University was second with 1.286 points.
Highlighting the weekend for the UB women was the individual performance of Annagrazia Bonsanti,who was named Female Rookie of the Meet, and junior Tatiana Shepel (Moscow, Russia). Bonsanti won three events taking first place in the 200-yard Free (1:52.10), the 500-yard Free (4:58.50) and the 1650-yard Free (17:09.69). Shepel grabbed the top spot in the 50-yard Free (23.38) and the 100-yard Free (50.57).
In the five relay events, the Purple Knights won the 800-yard Free Relay in a time of 7:32.04, and took second place in the other four events.
On the men's side, the Purple Knights dominated the relay events taking the top spot in all five races and took home seven individual first place for a total 12 first place finished over the three days of action.
Individually for the men, Ruben Gimenez (Burgos, Spain) won three events, the 100-yard Breaststroke (54.07), the 50-yard Free (19.86) and the 100-yard (44.37). Ruben was selected as the Male Swimmer of the Meet for the second straight season.
Also taking first places for the UB men at the 2015 Metropolitan Collegiate Conference Championship were junior Ivan Capan (Zagreb, Croatia) in the 200-yard IM (1:49.57), sophomore Antonio Nunez (Oviedo, Spain) in the 200-yard Butterfly (1:49.78), senior Didac Matsuyama (Barcelona, Spain in the 100-yard Butterfly (48.62) freshman Brian Kelly (Mahwah, N.J.) in the 100-yard Back (49.41) and junior Ivan Sangines (Barcelona, Spain) won the 500-yard Free (4:29.54). Kelly was name Male Rookie of the Meet.
Up next for those who have qualified on the UB swim teams is 2015 NCAA Division II National Swimming & Diving Championship Meet that will take place in Indianapolis, Indiana form March 11 through 14.
