Men's Hoops Wraps Up Non-Conference Slate With A Home Loss Versus Mercy
Four Reach Double Figures But Purple Knights Fall To The Mavericks, 79-72
Bridgeport, Conn.-Trailing 43-38 at halftime, the host University of Bridgeport men's basketball opened the second on a 9-0 run to take a 47-43 lead with 16:55 to play in the second half, but the visiting Mercy College Mavericks came back to post a 79-72 win on Saturday afternoon in Hubbell Gym in the final non-conference game of the season for both teams. UB is now 10-14 overall, and Mercy moves to 4-8 on the season.
Four Purple Knights reached double-digit scoring on Saturday, as three players had 13 points in senior Mason Williams (Voorhees, N.J. and juniors D'Andre Collins (Newark, N.J.) and Ryo Kobayashi (Kanagawa, Japan) and graduate student Matt Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) added 11 points.
Williams, who led Bridgeport with seven rebounds, has now reached double figures in eight consecutive games, and Saturday's 13 points are a season-high for Kobayashi.
Mercy's Sean Smith Jr. led three Mavericks in double figures and all scorers in the game with 24 points.
Up next, the UB men's team plays its final regular season home game of the 2022-23 season on Tuesday night, when the Purple Knights look to get back in the win column taking on Alliance University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game.
