Matt Turner's 28 Points Help Lead UB Men To An 84-81 Win At Goldey-Beacom
Purple Knights Connect On 12 Three-Point Shots On The Afternoon
Wilmington, Del.-University of Bridgeport graduate student Matt Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) scored a season-high 28 points to help lead the Purple Knights to an 84-81 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win over the host Goldey-Beacom College Lightning in Delaware on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, UB is now 9-8 overall and 5-4 in conference play. The Lightning slip to 6-11 overall and 3-4 in the CACC.
Turner was red-hot from the floor on Saturday knocking down 8-of-13 shots, including going 6-of-9 from behind the three-point arc, plus he was a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line.
Long distance shooting and making free throws played a huge part in the Purple Knights' win on Saturday, as the team hit 12-of-26 shots from distance and went 10-of-11 from the foul line. Those two factors help negate a big discrepancy in the number of times the teams went to the charity stripe, as Goldey-Beacom went 27-of-33 from the line.
Bridgeport led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but the Lightning rallied to take a 43-42 halftime advantage only to see the visitors rally to take another 12-point lead, 65-53, with 11:40 to play and then hold on for the win.
Three other Purple Knights joined Turner in double figures in Saturday's win, as junior Tim Dawson (New Haven, Conn.) netted 13 points, senior Malcolm Moye (Windsor, Conn.) was just shy of a double-double with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds plus senior Mason Williams (Voorhees, N.J.) chipped in an important 10 points off the UB bench.
The UB men's basketball team will return to action next Saturday afternoon, January 21, in Hubbell Gym at 3:00 p.m. when the Purple Knights will look to run their winning streak to three games against Holy Family University.
