Bridgeport Men Battle But Purple Knights Nipped In Overtime By Post In Non-Conference Men's Hoops Action
Purple Knights Go 1-1 To Open The 2021-22 Season
Bridgeport, Conn.-A basket by Post University's Isaiah Holmes with 1.7 seconds to play in overtime gave the visiting Eagles an 88-86 lead on their way to an 89-86 win over the host University of Bridgeport Purple Knights in the final game of the 2021 UB Men's Basketball Conference Crossover Classic on Sunday afternoon in Hubbell Gym. Both teams are now 1-1 on the young season after Sunday's result.
Holmes also sent the game into overtime tied at 79-79 when he hit a short jumper with just under four seconds to play in regulation after UB's Ryo Kobayashi (So., Kanagawa, Japan) had given Bridgeport a 79-77 lead with 19 seconds to play when he hit a three-point shot.
Post was down by as many 12 points early in the second, and they trailed 75-63 with 5:40 to play before rallying for the victory.
Newcomer, junior Malcolm Moye (Hartford, Conn.) led Bridgeport in scoring on Sunday with 23 points, as he connected on 9-of-13 field goals, plus he hit one three-point shot and four free throws.
Moye was joined in double figures by freshman Taj Chiles (Harlem, N.Y.), who came off the bench to net 15 points, plus he contributed four steals and three assists, and Tim Dawson (So., New Haven, Conn.), who chipped in 10 points.
UB junior Mason Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished just shy of a double-double against the Eagles grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds and scoring nine points.
Post's Devonte McCall led all scorers in Sunday's game with 34 points.
Up next, the UB men's basketball team will play its first road game of the 2021-22 season, as the Purple Knights travel to Stonehill College on Wednesday evening. Game time in Massachusetts is slated for 7:00 p.m.
