UB Men Rally From Down 17 Points In Second Half To Top Queens, 73-70
Senior Devon Elliott Hits Game-Winning Three-Pointer With 3.9 Seconds To Play
Bridgeport, Conn.-Trailing by 17 points, 56-39, with 12:17 to play in the second, the University of Bridgeport men's basketball team staged a furious comeback to defeat the visiting Queens (N.Y.) College Knights, 73-70, on Saturday afternoon in Hubbell Gym. The Purple Knights took their first lead of the game with just 3.9 second to play when senior Devon Elliott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) buried a three-point shot to put UB up, 71-70. After forcing a QC turnover on the ensuing inbounds play, junior Montana Mayfield (Philadelphia, Pa.) made two throws with just over two seconds to play to give Bridgeport its final margin of victory at 73-70, as a desperation half court heave by Queens at the buzzer fell well short of the basket. The victory snaps a four-game losing skid for the Purple Knights, who are now 13-12 overall and 10-7 in East Coast Conference action. Queens slips to 9-14 overall, and the Knights are 7-11 in the ECC.
Senior Jesse Jones (Irvington, N.J.) led UB in scoring on the afternoon with 19 points, 13 of which came in the second half. Jones was joined in double-digit scoring by classmates Muhammed Ahmed (Bronx, N.Y.) with 15 points, Elliott with 11 points and Ernest Rouse (Freeport, N.Y.) with 10 points.
Ahmed was also a big factor on defense for the winners blocking five shots and grabbing a game-high seven rebounds.
Tyree White led Queens and all scorers in the game with 24 points.
The UB men's basketball team will look to begin a winning streak on Monday evening when they host the Mavericks of Mercy College in the middle game of three-game homestand. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
