Bridgeport Men's Basketball Picks Up Big 66-63 Road Win Over # 11 Southern Connecticut State
Devon Elliott Leads The Purple Knights With A Game-High 22 Points
New Haven, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's basketball team notched its fourth straight victory and sixth win in its last seven games with a tough 66-63 non-conference, road win over the host Southern Connecticut State University Owls on Wednesday night, who came into the contest ranked number 11 in the nation in latest NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Poll. Wednesday's win also avenges a 99-78 home loss by the Purple Knights to SCSU on November 16 in this season's second game. Bridgeport is now 6-3 overall and Southern Connecticut slips to 8-3 on the year.
Three keys to Wednesday's win for UB were a strong finish to the first half, as the Purple Knights closed the first 20 minutes on an 8-0 run to take a 27-24 lead into the locker room which they never relinquished in the second half, excellent three-point shooting connecting on 48 percent of their shots behind the arc (12 of 15) and limiting SCSU to a field goal percentage of only 27.4 percent (20 of 73).
UB junior Devon Elliott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led all scorers in the game with 22 points, as he connected on 5 of 10 three-pointers. Classmate Ernest Rouse (Freeport, N.Y.) also reached double figures for Bridgeport with 14 points, and senior Willie Williams III (Norwalk, Conn.) fell just short of a double-double grabbing 10 rebounds and scoring eight points.
The UB men's basketball team closes out its pre-Holiday schedule on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. on the road versus NYIT in East Coast Conference action.
