Newcomer JoJo Swift Hits A Three-Point Shot At The OT Buzzer To Lift Men's Basketball To 75-72 Road Win At Southern Connecticut State
Senior Dariian David Leads All Scorers With 27 Points For UB
New Haven. Conn.-Newcomer JoJo Swift (Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.), playing his first game in a University of Bridgeport men's basketball uniform hit a three-point shot, his only field goal of the night, at the buzzer to lift the Purple Knights to a hard-fought, 75-72, road, overtime win over the host Southern Connecticut State University Owls on Wednesday night. UB, winners of back-to-back games for the first time in 2012-13, is now 5-7 overall. With the loss, SCSU is now 6-4. The Owls had tied the game at 72-72 with three seconds to play in overtime when Trevon Hamlet, who led Southern with 25 points and 10 rebounds, connected on two free throws.
Southern Connecticut trailed 62-53 with 6:34 to play in regulation, but SCSU rallied to finish regulation on 14-5 run to force the extra period tied at 67-67.
Bridgeport's Darian David (Bronx, N.Y.) led all scorers in the game with 27 points, as he went a perfect 8-of-8 from the foul line, plus David added seven rebounds and hit three, three-point shots for the winners.
David was joined in double-digit scoring by junior Ivan Simic (Belgrade, Serbia) 17 points and senior Dion Waiters (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 11 points. Simic also had eight rebounds, four steals and hit 4-of-6 three-pointers; while Waiters chipped in seven assists, five boards and two steals.
Senior Lloyd Antoine (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Purple Knights on the glass with 10 rebounds.
Hamlet was joined in double figures for the Owls by Greg Langston who had 16 points.
Wednesday's win avenged a 71-57 loss by Bridgeport to SCSU at home on November 11 in the second game of this season.
The UB men's basketball team will now be idle until Thursday, January 3, 2013 when UB will host East Coast Conference newcomer Roberts Wesleyan College. Action is scheduled to tip-off in Hubbell Gym at 7:00 p.m.
