Big Finish Helps Men's Basketball To 73-68 Home Win Over Queens
Purple Knights Outscore Queens, 18-8, Over Final 7:04 Of The Game
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's basketball team outscored the visiting Queens (N.Y.) College Knights 18-8 over the final 7:04 of the game as the Purple Knights snapped a three-game losing streak with a 73-68 home East Coast Conference win on Wednesday night. With the win, UB is now 4-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play. With the loss, Queens is now 7-3 overall and tied with the Purple Knights atop the ECC standings at 4-1.
Senior Jermaine Washington (Philadelphia, Pa.), who led four Purple Knights in double-figure scoring with 18 points on the night, scored a lay-up off an assist from classmate Tim Cokley (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) with 2:52 to play to give UB a 65-64 lead which they never relinquished. Cokley scored 16 points on the night, as he hit four-of-five three-point shots. Rounding out the four UB players in double-digits were graduate student Dave Boykin (White Plains, N.Y.) with 15 points, and junior Josh Martin (Philadelphia, PA.) with 12 points. Martin also led the Purple Knights with five assists on the night.
Defense was name of the game on Wednesday for UB as the Purple Knights forced a total of 25 Queens' turnovers on the night, and Bridgeport converted those 25 miscues into a total of 28 points.
Akim Neverson led four QC players in double figures with 18 points.
Bridgeport gets right back into to action on Thursday night as they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. for the team's final non-conference contest of the season at Philadelphia University. Action gets underway in the City of Brotherly Love at 6:00 p.m.
