Solid Bullpen And A Big Five-Run Sixth Inning Lift UB Baseball To A 6-4 Comeback Road Win Over AIC
Bridgeport Relievers Blank the Yellow Jackets Over Six Innings Giving Up Only Three Hits
Springfield, Mass.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team used a fine performance by its bullpen that pitched six innings of scoreless ball allowing only three hits and an offensive explosion in the sixth inning when UB scored five runs to picked up a comeback, 6-4, non-conference win over the host American International College Yellow Jackets on Tuesday afternoon in Massachusetts. Bridgeport, which had now won two games in a row and earned victories in five of its last seven outings, is now 14-17 overall, and AIC falls to 8-20 in 2022.
Freshman Tim Dolan (Massapequa, N.Y.) earned the win on Tuesday in relief of starter Jason Giambra (So., Milford, Conn.), as he worked three innings of scoreless baseball to notch his first collegiate victory.
Dolan was followed by senior Matthew Wirz (Stamford, Conn.), who got the hold on Tuesday, blanking the 'Jackets for two innings, and then classmate Justin Hafele (Shelton, Conn.) closed the door for his fifth save of the season with a zero in the ninth inning.
On offense, the Purple Knights took the lead in the contest with its five-run sixth, as freshman Jeremy Rodrigues (Monroe, Conn,) who had two runs batted at AIC, had a run-scoring single, as did senior Craig Leonard (Holtsville, N.Y.). Freshman Michael Fletcher (Winter Park, Fla.) would next tie the game at 4-4 with a two-RBI double, and then Fletcher scored what proved to be the winning run on Tuesday with a steal of home.
Up next, the UB baseball team continues a bust week of action with a two-game homestand in Seaside Park that opens on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. with a non-conference clash against local rival the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University.
